Love Ride Event Results in Motorcyclists Deaths

Two motorcyclists were killed at the Love Ride event on Sunday.

Two motorcyclists were killed and two others injured in separate traffic accidents on Sunday during the San Fernando Valley Love Ride, a charity event popular among motorcycle riders.

The Love Ride, which stretches from Glendale to Castaic Lake, is an annual event that helps raise money for children's charities. The Love Ride Foundation was founded in 1984 by Oliver Shokouh. All proceeds from this year's event are earmarked for Autism Speaks, an organization focusing on childhood autism research. According to event spokeswoman Susan Morrison, the two fatalities were the first in the event's 28-year history.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the first accident occurred 10:24 a.m. on Sunday when two motorcycle riders collided headed northbound on the I-5 Freeway just south of Branford Street near the 170 Freeway. Both individuals, who were participating in the Love Ride, were taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.

Approximately one hour after the first accident, a second motorcycle accident occurred in the same location. According to police reports, a male rider and his female passenger were killed when their motorcycle collided with a tractor trailer. Police believe that the traffic jam caused by the first accident may have contributed to the fatal crash. It is still unclear whether the riders who were killed were participating in the Love Ride. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

As evidenced by this weekend's events, motorcycle accidents can result in serious injuries and even death. It is estimated that since 1966, over 100,000 Americans have been killed as a result of accidents involving motorcycles. Approximately 3/4 of all motorcycle accidents occur as a result of the motorcycle striking another vehicle, with the remaining 25% of accidents due to a collision with a stationary object. The risk for a debilitating injury or even death is significantly increased at higher speeds or if the driver isn't wearing a helmet.
